Woodpile's FAQ

Here are a few of the questions that people often ask me when I am carving or when I am at my booth at a craft show. If you have a question, feel free to contact me.

  • Why Woodpile?
We get funny looks from folks when we tell them the 'woodpile' is a great place for coffee and lunch! The name came from Liz's first business as a wood carver. It just seemed wrong to give up the name once we added food and coffee to the mix.
And if we do say so… the food here is great. Really! So get a coffee, order a sandwich, and browse the great art and craft or just settle in with a magazine and make yourself at home.
  • When is the café open?
We are open year-round, Monday to Saturday. Take a look at the Café page for our menu and hours.
  • Where are you located?
We are at 181 Main Street, in the heart of Liverpool,  Nova Scotia.
  • Will you teach me how to carve?
Woodpile Cafe Workspace and Demo Area
I do offer carving classes and workshops from time to time. We designed the café to include a workspace that's suitable for classes, so I sometimes offer sessions there. Also, I occasionally offer workshops through Lee Valley in Halifax. So, if you would like to learn to carve your own Wood Spirit, for example, you are welcome to contact me.
  • Where did you learn to carve?
I took a night class in 1993 from Bob Morrison in the Annapolis Valley and learned the basics that allowed me to teach myself everything else. Thanks Bob!
  • Why don't you use power? It is so much faster.
I feel like I can control my hand tools and get the look and feel more intimately than using a dusty power tool.
  • What wood do you use?
I use Nova Scotia white pine to whittle the painted pieces and use almost anything to create the Woodspirits. Oak, Ash, Cherry and Maple are all smiling at me from the walls, but my favorite would have to be Apple. It is warm in colour and creates a gleaming, smooth finish. (In fact, the border that you see around each page of this website is a tiny piece of Apple wood from one of my carvings!)
  • Where do you get the wood for your carvings?
I do not cut wood to carve but rather carve wood that has been cut. I have been found in ditches and land-clearings, perusing piles of driftwood, and begging off a unique piece of wood from a friend's woodpile.
