As a young person, I'd never have imagined working full-time as an artisan. As far as I knew, I had not an artistic bone in my body. Life has a strange way of working
out however, and after a long journey, I find myself working full-time in my small studio designing and hand-carving original pieces of art.
One of the few drawbacks to having such a great passion was not being able to work with my husband, Michael, a chef of 22 years. In the spring
of 2005, we embarked on a new adventure that we called the Woodpile Carvings & Café. We rented a large space on Main Street in Liverpool and began to create our dream of
some ten years. We always wanted to run a place together and now we were combining my carving with his cooking. An unlikely combination that is going really well!
Since becoming a full-time woodcarver, a wonderful thing has happened in my community. Folks I know (and many I don't
know) drop off interesting pieces of wood on my doorstep without a word. I looked out one morning to see my grade nine woodshop teacher dropping off two great gnarls of wood
in my drive. It is like having my own flock of wood faeries constantly adding to the WOODPILE!
This has been an adventure in creativity, business, and friendship. I have met amazing people in the past few years
and my work has developed into distinct, character-based original designs that I whittle or carve using knives and gouges. It is truly a gift to find something you love and I am thankful for every chip that falls.
